Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL QUESTIONS

General Questions

Due to our unique design and testing process and extensive knowledge of barcode technology we can assure our clients that their barcodes are as scan-compliant as regular barcodes.* During the development process, each design undergoes multiple tests. (*See Terms of Service for details. Also read our Technical Questions FAQ section below.)

You can use your custom Vanity Barcode on pretty much anything you like, but scan reliability IS affected by substrate/material. It’s always best to ask us if a material is suitable for a Vanity Barcode. See this question for more info.

We’ve discontinued our online stock library catalog. You can still see designs in our Gallery. If you see a design that you like in the Gallery, please contact us to find out about its available license option. We now offer either full-buyout rights or limited-license rights. For pricing options, please contact us.

ORDERING QUESTIONS & PRICING

Ordering & Pricing

Please contact us using our contact form and we’ll be in touch by email to schedule a phone call. We’ll discuss your needs, timeline and answer any questions we can. Once we have enough information to prepare an estimate, we’ll send that off to you for review. Payment terms and delivery schedule are included in your estimate.

We no longer offer stock library designs/pricing. We now offer only a custom option, in two license models: full-buyout rights and limited-use rights. The price for customization varies between these two options. Please contact us for pricing. Quantity pricing is based on number of codes applied per design.

Discounts apply PER DESIGN. If you order multiple codes per single design, you get quantity pricing per quantity ordered in a single ‘batch’. If you would like to order customizations in the future, they quantity pricing only applies to the actual batch ordered at one time.

We will email you to set up a time to discuss your specific needs for a Vanity Barcode by phone.

Vanity Barcodes are customized for each unique barcode number you provide us with. You get your codes in vector EPS format along with GS1 grade results (per code). We will send necessary files via email or other digital transmission service (such as cloud.ly or wetransfer.com). Codes are provided in the optimal standard size in the ideal colors for optimal scan performance. You are free to use your custom codes as you wish, as per our Terms of Service.

Custom barcode concepts: 2-3 weeks

Testing for custom concept selections: 10 business days

Customization of additional code numbers: varies depending on number of codes required

Stage 1 testing per code: 10 business days

Stage 2 testing: varies, depends on timeline for submission of physical samples of packaging/print material from client

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Technical Questions

Due to our unique design and testing process and extensive knowledge of barcode technology we can assure our clients that their barcodes are as scan-compliant as regular barcodes.* During the development process, each design undergoes multiple tests. (*See Terms of Service for details. Also read our Technical Questions FAQ section below.)

We can provide a Vanity Barcode for most code formats, including: UPC, EAN, JAN, ISSN, ISMN, ISSN, UCC EAN-128, GS1-128 and more.

We don’t recommend Vanity Barcodes for the following code formats: DUN-14, EAN-14, ITF-14, UCC-14, SCC-14. (Some designs may not be suitable for your requested code format.

Please specify the code format in your order request. If we can’t provide you with Vanity Barcode for your required format, we’ll let you know.)

Vanity Barcodes are terrific for lots of items besides packaging! They can work very well on: books, periodicals, product coupons and music albums. In fact, anything with a barcode is a potential candidate for a Vanity Barcode.

Very small objects that don’t have enough space to work with are not recommended. If you are unsure if your product is large enough, please email us.

We use the universal GS1 grading system, which grades barcode reliability from A to F to help you determine how reliably a barcode is likely to scan.

Vanity Barcodes with an A or B grade scan 100% the same as regular (unadorned) barcodes. All barcode designs must meet a B grade or higher. We send every code number to GS1 for testing as part of our service.

The print substrate (material you will be printing the final barcode on) can have an affect on the quality of the scan reliability (and can thus affect grade level).

Some examples of print methods and materials that may degrade scan grade:

  • flexographic print on flexible plastic film
  • low-resolution or high dot gain flexographic print on labels
  • low-contrast or irregular-contrast thermographic label printing
  • packaging subject to “frosting over” in a supermarket freezer case

For this reason, we require ALL barcodes to be tested at least once. You can select pre-production testing (stage 1 testing) or on-press testing (stage 2 testing). Many print and packaging vendors provide grade testing on the production floor, so you may prefer the stage 1 testing if your stage 2 testing is already covered in your QA procedures.

If you require stage 2 testing, we offer this at a reasonable fee per code tested. An actual production print must be submitted to Vanity Barcodes for testing.
